- Subject: Amps - Pounds relationship
- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- While reading a recent ad for a well-known power supply company, I noticed
- an interesting relationship between the maximum current rating of the
- supply and the shipping weight; they seemed almost equal. The linear
- regression of the 42 data points (different power supply models) from the
- ad is:
-
- Weight(in lbs) = (.832 * Current(in amps)) + 3.52
-
- The coorelation coefficient is .96, so the fit is pretty close. So, if
- you're buying a power supply, you can guess that the shipping weight in
- pounds is about equal to the maximum current rating times 0.8. Ain't
- science grand?

-
- A friend and fellow Ham has a group of repeaters here in the
- Bay Area. He has been using Creative Control Products SRC-10
- controllers with good success. Unfortunately it appears as if
- CCP has gone out of business. They *don't* owe him money but
- he'd like to get access to some additional units, spare parts,
- bare boards, SW, etc. for long term support of his system.
-
- The last address he has for CCP is in Grand Junction, Colorado
- but they aren't answering mail and the phone is disconnected.
- He contacted '73 Magazine (where they used to run ads) and was
- told the owner "chose to get out of the Ham business". (I can't
- imagine why?)
-
- So any information about the company or SRC-10 designs would
- be appreciated.

-
- Here's a hypothetical (maybe not!) question about contest operations for some
- solicited discussion --
-
- Wanting to participate in FD or another contest and not having a station set
- up at home, I arrange with a ham friend to use his station -- rigs, tower,
- beams, power supply, etc. For the duration of the contest, I operate from his
- QTH, sleep on the couch and eat my meals from his 'frigerator (he is REALLY a
- nice guy!) I rack up the contacts and have a great time .... using MY
- callsign, not his. Question: should HIS call, not MINE be used; should the
- call be MINE/HIS or HIS/MINE; or does it really matter? (Afterall, when the
- contest scores are published in QST is it the OPERATOR or STATION that gets the
- recognition?)
- Is this a question of propriety or legality?

-
- Research has shown no evidence that there are harmful effects to
- nonpolarizing electromagnetic emmisions in the hf bands.
-
- Picture, if you will, the average ham station, running 200 PEP watts for one
- hour per week. Compare this, if you will to a commercial broadcast AM
- station running 50,000 watts 24 hours per day. Now measure the total
- level of electromagnetic emissions received.
-
- Even with the geometrically higher levels of emissions put out by the
- broadcast station, research has failed to document any adverse health
- effects to people living immediately next to the broadcast station's towers.
-
- When it comes to UHF signals in the microwave areas, care must be taken,
- but these are not the frequencies (about 1000 Mhz) used by ham operators.

- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- I'm having lots of fun mobiling with my new Kenwood TS-50 and 20 meter
- HamStick antenna. My only problem is engine noise :-(
-
- I have no alternator whine but I do have what appears to be ignition
- noise (the sound is rough and varies with engine speed, at low speeds
- there are distinct pops). It definately comes in through the antenna
- and not through the power leads. It runs about S5 to S7 on the TS-50
- meter. The TS-50 noise blanker is effective against it at idle but
- not at highway speeds.
-
- My car is a 1993 Plymouth Acclaim 4 cylinder. The body seems well
- bonded together electrically because I measure fractions of an ohm
- resistance between various body panels (including the trunk lid) and
- the negative terminal of the battery. The fused #10 power leads from
- the TS-50 are connected directly to the battery. My antenna is
- temporarily on a mag-mount on the trunk lid. Connecting a heavy wire
- from the mag mount to the body does not reduce the noise.
-
- So, HF mobile elmers, what should I do to reduce this noise? I'm sure
- there are tons more stations to hear and work....
-
- Thanks and 73

-
- Hi Gary:
-
- I am not an HF mobile expert, but have done a bit with radios that did
- not have noise blankers. I will just tell you what did help me to reduce
- the "hash" I got from the car. (I never really faced the standard
- ignition noise, the fast "cracking" noises.)
-
- I found that, magically, a very short lead from the body ground to my rig
- helped, even with direct connections to the ground lead of the battery and
- at the antenna. The difference was amazing. (Of course, you probably
- have already done this :-).
-
- I have a friend with a Volvo that has an electronic fuel pump in the
- back of the car (near the antenna), and who found that to be the major
- contributor to noise. He did some bypassing of the lines there and cured
- the problem.
-
- I have had friends use coax to replace their spark plug wires, or use
- braided shield to run over the car spark plug wires, and to otherwise
- shield the auto electronics boxes. They claim some improvement. I suspect
- you could reposition the mag mount for your HF antenna and see if you
- can "locate" the noise in general.
-
- Best of luck. I like to mobile, too.

- It was an issue which came out this spring. I was enthused to see it until I
- read it.
- One of the highest rated devices was an "in the ear mike/earphone" rig.
- I own one of those and borrowed another. USELESS!
- They are VERY sensitive and pick up every bit of noise, wind, engine, gear
- shifts, passing trucks, ect., and I ride a quiet motorcycle.
- I used it in a resturant and the person I was communicating with said he
- could hear conversations elsewhere in the resturant comming over the
- air while I talked!
-
- I have found something which does work, a new throat mike rig from an outfit
- called Genisys (sp?). It picks up ZERO noise. It's high freq. response is
- limited, but it gets good reports from people I talk to. They often express
- suprise when I mention that I am motorcycle mobile. It has an attached
- earphone which fits well in the ear.
- I still think I would prefer a speaker or built in helmet phones, just for
- conveinience.

- I've used the headsets and mic element used in the NADY
- motocycling intercoms successfully for years. I don't find the
- ear buds stay in all that well, but the little speaker units for
- the open face helmets work decently. I usually modify them to
- remove the boom, although that works fine, and use the microphone
- from the full face version - essentially creating a hybrid with the
- open face speaker box and the full face mike unit, and rewire the
- cord so it plugs directly into the control box from my ICOM style
- HT (mine is actually an alinco dj580, but the hs-10 box works fine
- with it). The most important thing is to turn the gain on the mic
- *way* down, barely off the peg. I get very good comments on the
- sound ("quieter than your car") and I can hear well. I usually use a
- pair of foam earplugs to reduce the helmet noise anyway and save
- the hearing, and the little speaker can drive hard enough to be heard
- well above those with the shield up.
-
- Last I looked you could get the replacement speaker/mic sets for the
- NADY intercoms in the Dennis Kirk catalog for about $20/each.
-
- Hope this is useful to you. And remember, traffic is a non-maskable
- interrupt! :-)

- To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
-
- At the Panther Amateur Radio Club's (PARC) Field Day, we found that
- an automatic antenna tuner is good for more than just loading up short
- mobile whips.
-
- Our main FD antenna was a full-sized 80M Zepp dipole. One end of the
- antenna was attached to the roof of a 10 story building, the other end
- to a tree below. The antenna was fed with 300 ohm twin lead that
- eventually connected to a 4:1 balun. For an transmatch, we borrowed
- an SGC-230 automatic antenna tuner.
-
- This made for a great combination. The SGC tuner had no problem at
- all producing an acceptable SWR on 80-20M (we did not try 15 or 10). We
- didn't waste any time or battery capacity fiddling with a transmatch.
- This also permitted our less-experienced hams to easily switch bands
- without fiddling with a manual antenna tuner. We made 479 contacts with
- the antenna, most of them at 50W CW, so it seems to have put out a great
- signal.
